Fort DuPont Historic District Project

New Castle County, Delaware

Archival Research, Architectural Reconnaissance, and Archaeological Predictive Model

On behalf of the Fort DuPont Redevelopment and Preservation Corporation (the Corporation), and in conjunction with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), and Delaware State Historic Preservation Office (DESHPO), Dovetail Cultural Resource Group conducted intensive-level research and archaeological modeling of the Fort DuPont Historic District in Delaware City, New Castle County, Delaware. Recognizing the vast history and significance of the Fort DuPont Historic District, the Corporation has embarked on a multi-year rehabilitation and development of Fort DuPont. Dovetail worked closely with the Corporation, DNREC, and the DESHPO to produce a thorough cultural resource planning tool to help aid in this redevelopment. Dovetail’s primary tasks for this project include:

  • Compile and document the extensive history of the property through archival research at repositories in Delaware and Washington, D.C.
  • Determine the areas with potential for the presence of high cultural value
  • Reconnaissance-level architectural survey of extant and demolished resources
  • Technical report production
  • Coordination with the Corporation, DNREC, and DESHPO

Dovetail was successful in collating archival research and field results using creative GIS-based mapping and modeling to produce a document that serves both current and future preservation planning needs for the property. Dovetail completed all studies within the project schedule and is continuing to work with the Corporation on additional technical studies associated with the district.
